Dosing Functional Mushrooms: A Beginner's Guide to Finding Your Range

One of the most common questions we get is also the simplest: "How much should I take?"

The answer is "it depends" — but only in the same way that the answer to "how much coffee should I drink" depends on you, the time of day, your tolerance, and your goal. With a little structure, the dose question becomes very approachable.

This guide walks through the actual numbers for each major functional mushroom and adaptogen we use at Mushroom Alchemy, why a piece of chocolate or a gummy is already a calibrated dose, and how to find your personal range without overcomplicating it.

The Format Already Did the Math

Here's the most useful thing to understand first: every piece of chocolate or gummy in our line is a complete, calibrated dose. We didn't just sprinkle mushrooms on a snack — each serving contains a research-aligned amount of extract designed to do the job on the label.

That means the default protocol is brutally simple: one serving. One square of Social Chocolate Focus Ritual for a focus block. One Social Gummy Calm Ritual for the wind-down. Most people never need to think harder than that.

The rest of this guide is for people who want to understand why those doses were chosen and how to adjust within reason.

The Major Compounds and Their Ranges

Lion's Mane. Most cognitive studies use 500–1500mg of standardized extract daily, split or all at once. Below 500mg, effects are subtle. Above 1500mg, the returns diminish quickly. Our Focus Chocolate and Focus Gummy sit squarely in the effective range.

Reishi. 1–3 grams of extract per day is the typical wellness range; lower doses (250–500mg) are common for sleep-specific use. More is not better — reishi can sedate at higher doses, which is great in the evening, terrible at 9 AM.

Cordyceps. 1–3 grams of extract for endurance/energy use, taken 30–60 minutes before activity. Daily smaller doses (300–600mg) work for general energy support. Stack with other Energy Ritual ingredients for the smoothest curve.

Kava. 70–250mg of kavalactones per serving is the social/anxiety-reduction range. Higher doses are sedating. Our kava products are calibrated to the lower end of that range, so one serving is enough for sociability without sleepiness.

Kanna. 25–100mg of standardized extract for mood support. Some people are notably sensitive and feel effects at the low end; others need the full dose. Start low.

Yerba Mate. 70–100mg of caffeine per serving (plus L-theanine and polyphenols). Behaves like a slightly milder cup of coffee on the caffeine axis but with a longer plateau.

The First-Week Protocol

If you're new to functional mushrooms, here's what we recommend for the first seven days regardless of which product you start with:

  1. Day 1: One serving. Note the time you took it and how you feel 30 minutes, 90 minutes, and 4 hours later. Keep notes.
  2. Days 2–3: Same dose, same time of day. Most people start to notice effects becoming more consistent.
  3. Days 4–7: Adjust timing if needed. Move energy doses earlier, sleep doses later. Don't increase the dose yet.
  4. End of week 1: If you don't feel anything, you have three options. (a) Try the product again for another week — many adaptogens build slowly. (b) Try a different format (chocolate vs. gummy). (c) Try a second serving (only after the first week of single-dose trial).

When to Add a Second Serving

For most people, one serving covers the use case. Situations where a second serving makes sense:

  • Extended deep work block. If you're working a four-hour focus session and the first dose of Focus Chocolate fades at the two-hour mark, a half-serving at hour two extends the runway.
  • Long social evening. A second Bliss Gummy around hour two of a party keeps the easy mood going without piling up.
  • Pre-workout endurance. Two Yerba Mate Energy chocolates 45 minutes before a hard training session is a known stack for some users.

What we don't recommend: stacking sedating compounds (kava, reishi) earlier in the day "just to see." That's how you find out kava can put you to sleep at 2 PM.

Cycling and Tolerance

Most adaptogens don't build aggressive tolerance the way stimulants do. But after several months of daily use, some users report subtler effects. The standard suggestion: take one or two days per week off, or cycle three weeks on and one week off. Your nervous system stays sensitive, the benefits stay sharp.

If you want a deeper dive on cycling protocols, our forthcoming guide on microdosing adaptogens covers the principles.

Where to Start

If you're brand new to functional mushrooms, the Complete Ritual Bundle gives you focus, calm, and energy in calibrated doses so you can map each compound to its real-life use case without guessing. The Chocolate Sampler covers similar ground in chocolate form.

One serving. Notice. Adjust. Repeat. That's the dosing protocol.
