Sober Curiosity in 2026: The Cultural Shift Driving Functional Mushroom Sales

Five years ago, ordering a non-alcoholic drink at a dinner meant explaining yourself. In 2026, it usually means the bartender has a curated NA menu and the people at your table are asking what you ordered.

The cultural shift around alcohol consumption is one of the most underappreciated wellness stories of the decade. And quietly, in the gap where the third drink used to live, functional mushrooms have become the most credible alternative on the table.

The Data

Non-alcoholic beverage sales in the US grew more than 30% year-over-year in both 2024 and 2025, according to Nielsen IQ. Gen Z drinks roughly 20% less than millennials did at the same age. The number of self-identified "sober curious" adults more than tripled between 2022 and 2025.

The functional mushroom category grew alongside this shift. Total US functional mushroom sales crossed $4 billion in 2026, with the fastest-growing subcategory being products marketed for "social calm" — exactly the slot alcohol used to fill.

Our Relaxation Ritual collection sits in this category, and the sales pattern reflects the broader shift: spike on Friday afternoons, peaks before social events, accelerated demand around holidays.

What Drove the Shift

Four cultural currents converged:

1. The wellness-tracking generation. The same demographic that wears Whoop and Oura rings can literally see what alcohol does to their HRV and sleep quality. Once you have the data, the cost-benefit math gets harder to ignore.

2. The economic squeeze. Alcohol got expensive. A $20 cocktail in a city, three nights a week, becomes $3,000 a year — before the Uber home and the lost Sunday.

3. The mental health awareness wave. Anxiety and depression rates among younger adults are higher than ever; the relationship between alcohol and both is well-documented. People making the connection are quietly opting out.

4. The discovery of alternatives. Five years ago, "what do I order instead?" had bad answers. Now it has good ones: high-quality NA beer and wine, kava-based mocktails, kanna-anchored functional gummies. The substitution stack is real.

Why Functional Mushrooms Won the Slot

Other categories tried to fill the alcohol gap. Mocktails are great but don't do anything. CBD has dose-accuracy problems (see our Kava vs. CBD comparison). Cannabis is illegal in many places and impairs more visibly.

Kava, kanna, and reishi-based products work through different mechanisms but converge on the same outcome: social ease without sedation, mood lift without impairment, calm without disorientation. The combination is exactly what alcohol delivered, minus the morning cost.

Our Social Gummy Bliss and Social Gummy Kanna are the products most commonly cited by sober-curious consumers as their "I can do this" moment.

The New Bar

Kava bars expanded from a handful of locations in 2020 to over 500 in the US by mid-2026. Most are small, community-anchored, and serve as the "third place" that bars used to but cleaner. The clientele skews younger than wine bars and older than coffee shops — the in-between space that previously didn't have a venue.

The functional mushroom space has parallel growth in the at-home market. Stocking a Kanna Bundle or Relaxation Bundle in the kitchen has become the new "having wine in the rack."

Who's Driving the Trend

Not who you'd guess. The most enthusiastic functional mushroom consumers in our data aren't 22-year-olds — they're 30–45-year-old professionals who used to drink three nights a week and want to keep the social texture without the productivity tax.

This demographic is also the most price-insensitive (they can afford premium wellness products) and the most likely to become repeat customers (they're not trend-chasing, they're solving a real problem).

What's Next

Three trends to watch in late 2026 and 2027:

The non-alcoholic drinks aisle in grocery stores will keep expanding. Expect entire dedicated NA sections, not just a corner of the beer aisle.

Functional mushroom products will move from specialty wellness shops into mainstream grocery and convenience channels.

Insurance and corporate wellness programs will start covering adaptogen-based stress management programs — the actuarial math finally supports it.
