When we started Mushroom Alchemy, we quickly learned that the supplement industry has a dirty secret. A significant portion of "mushroom" supplements on the market contain little to no actual mushroom. Instead, they use myceliated grain, essentially rice or oat substrate that has been colonized by mushroom mycelium but never allowed to fruit. The result is a product that is mostly starch with trace amounts of the compounds you actually want.
Fruiting Body vs. Mycelium on Grain
The distinction matters enormously. The fruiting body of a mushroom, the part you would recognize as a mushroom, contains dramatically higher concentrations of beta-glucans, triterpenes, and other bioactive compounds compared to mycelium grown on grain. Independent lab testing has shown that some mycelium-on-grain products contain as little as 5% beta-glucans, while quality fruiting body extracts regularly test above 30%.
Our Sourcing Standards
Every mushroom extract we use comes from organically grown fruiting bodies. We work with growers who cultivate on natural substrates, primarily hardwood logs that mimic the mushrooms' natural growing conditions. This slower growing process produces denser, more nutrient-rich fruiting bodies compared to rapid indoor cultivation on supplemented sawdust.
Third-Party Testing
We test every batch of raw material before it enters our production facility. We test for beta-glucan content, heavy metals, pesticide residues, and microbial contamination. We also verify the identity of each species using DNA testing, because misidentification is more common in the mushroom supply chain than most consumers realize.
Transparency as a Value
We believe you deserve to know exactly what you are putting into your body. Our Certificates of Analysis are available for every product, and we are always happy to discuss our sourcing in detail. The functional mushroom industry will only improve when consumers demand transparency, and we intend to lead by example.
